I just found out something interesting

January 8th, 2016 at 04:06 am

It's tax season in the US, and I just learned something very interesting. Just for giggles I printed out my last pay stub of 2015 and looked up my 2014 W-2 form so I could get an estimate of any possible tax refund. Using that information I went to Turbo Tax's website and entered it all in. Well, guess what? Turbo Tax allowed me to file my taxes early, so they are already done for this year! One less thing on my to do list. The IRS will begin processing returns on January 18th.

Do you file the 1040EZ? Many of us need to wait for various tax forms besides a W2 in order to file, so not everyone can do this.

I am far from being able to file my taxes! But since I will probably have to pay, there's no hurry.

Geesh. We never even have all of our forms until March!

Creditcardfree, yes, I file the 1040EZ. I am aware that the majority of companies don't send out W-2's or 1099's until the end of January, so it was a shock that I was actually able to file my taxes so early. As I said in my post the IRS will start processing returns on the 18th, so I should get my refund in a couple of weeks.

That makes sense that you wouldn't have to have your W2 in hand, if you are simply filing the basic form and have the numbers on hand. Super nice to have it out of the way! I would at least compare your 2015 W2 when you receive it with what you filed to make sure there are no major discrepancies.
